Surrey Couple Celebrate 65th Wedding Anniversary at Reigate Care Home
Surrey Couple Mark 65th Wedding Anniversary at Care Home

Anne Morgan, 87, and her husband John, 91, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary—a Sapphire milestone—at Signature at Reigate Grange in Surrey. Residents, family, and team members gathered to honor the couple, whose love story began in 1960 at a friend's party in London. Anne recalls it was love at first sight: the moment John walked into the room, she knew he was the man she would marry.

A Love Story Spanning Decades

The couple became engaged by Christmas 1960 and married on June 3, 1961, at St Mary's Church in Chart Lane, followed by a marquee reception at Anne's family home. Reflecting on their wedding day, Anne remembered the glorious sunshine and joyful celebrations, but also an unexpected moment: the substitute vicar delivered a 20-minute lecture on hard-boiled eggs and tolerance during the service, which she admitted was not entirely appreciated at the time.

Over 65 years, Anne and John built a life centered on family, community, and adventure. Their happiest memories include welcoming their son Richard, becoming grandparents to Jack and Caitlin, and traveling the world together, completing three round-the-world cruises after John's retirement.

John Morgan's Public Service Legacy

John dedicated much of his life to public service, serving as Mayor of Reigate twice—first in 1983-84 and again in 2020-21—alongside more than 30 years on the council. He expressed pride in representing residents across the Borough of Reigate and later the Borough of Reigate and Banstead.

When asked the secret to a long and happy marriage, the couple agreed: "Tolerance, understanding, never holding a grudge and always saying, 'I still love you.' Never go to sleep on a row."

Special Celebration at Reigate Grange

Signature at Reigate Grange organized an afternoon celebration with a traditional high tea, bubbly, and live music from Anne's favorite pianist, Kwaku. The Mayor's Mace Bearer, Paul Danbury, attended on behalf of the Mayor of Reigate and Banstead, offering guests insights into the history of mayoral regalia. Former colleagues, local representatives, and friends joined the festivities.

Anne said: "We're so happy that we could celebrate our 65th wedding anniversary surrounded by our family, friends, our wonderful new friends here at Reigate Grange and the staff, who have all become so special to us. It made the day incredibly memorable."

Ana-Maria Cormos, general manager at Signature at Reigate Grange, said: "It has been a real privilege to celebrate Anne and John's Sapphire wedding anniversary with them. Sixty-five years of marriage is an incredible achievement, and their warmth, kindness and devotion to one another are an inspiration to everyone in our community. We were delighted to help create such a special day for them and their loved ones."
