There is nothing quite like the feeling of blooming marvellous community spirit, is there? Whether it is a friendly wave over the garden fence, a chat at the local shop, or a helping hand when you need it most, our neighbourhoods truly make our corners of the world special.
Well, it is time to get the sausage rolls prepped and the picnic blankets ready, because the UK's biggest annual community celebration is right around the corner. The Big Lunch is a brilliant initiative kicked off by the folks at the Eden Project, and it returns from Friday, June 5 to Monday, June 8, 2026. As an extra exciting twist this year, The Big Lunch is joining forces with volunteering powerhouse The Big Help Out to create one spectacular weekend of friendship, food, fun, and community action. They are calling it 'One Big Do', and honestly, we could not think of a better excuse to get together.
At its heart, The Big Lunch is all about sharing food and conversation with the people living right on your doorstep. Over 10 million of us across the UK took part last year, proving that you just cannot beat a good old-fashioned get-together. This year, because it is doubling up with The Big Help Out, it is not just about the picky bits and sandwiches (though we do love a sausage roll). It is also a fantastic chance to lend a hand locally.
The beauty of it is that there are absolutely no rules. Your 'do' can be as big or as small as you like. You could plan a full-blown street party with the neighbours, or you could keep it sweet and simple with a quiet afternoon tea in the garden. Want to weave in a bit of volunteering? You could gather a few friends for a quick local litter pick, do some weeding in a communal garden, or even use your lunch to collect donations for a nearby food bank. It is all about doing something positive that makes your local area feel happier, greener, and more connected.
If the idea of knocking on a neighbour's door to invite them makes you feel a little nervous, do not worry - you are definitely not alone. A great way to break the ice is by dropping a friendly little note through a few letterboxes, or making a quick post on your local community Facebook group. You will probably find that your neighbours are just as keen for a catch-up as you are. You can also check out their official event map online to see if there is already a 'Big Do' happening right up your street that you can join in with.
Whether you are sharing a cuppa, passing the potato salad, or rolling up your sleeves to help a local charity, let us make this a weekend to remember.
