Travellers set up camp on Birmingham playing fields
A large group of travellers has moved onto playing fields in Birmingham, just as the school holidays begin. Councillor Baz Baber reported that a 'significant number' of caravans gained unauthorised access to Oaklands Recreation Ground in Yardley over the weekend. The group is also said to include horses.
Councillor Baber stated that he has informed Birmingham City Council and steps are being taken to evict the encampment. The playing fields, which have entrances off Hob Moor Road, Holder Road, Coventry Road, and the A4040, would have been heavily used by families due to the good weather and the start of the school holidays.
Council action underway
Councillor Baz Baber (Yardley, Stechford) said: 'I am aware a significant number of caravans have gained unauthorised access to Oaklands Recreation Grounds. Birmingham City Council officers have been notified and are taking the necessary legal steps to have the encampment removed. I will continue to monitor the situation and keep residents updated as more information becomes available.'
The council has previously stated on the issue: 'The council is committed to actively protecting its land and will take steps to recover this land where unauthorised encampments encroach upon it.'
The incident has sparked concern among local residents, who were looking forward to using the fields during the summer holidays. The council is expected to provide further updates as the legal process unfolds.
