Just four years after punters were reportedly taking drugs off the bar, The Milestone pub in New Invention, Willenhall, has been named among the best in Britain. The venue has been shortlisted in the Best Community Pub category of the prestigious Great British Pub Awards, marking a remarkable turnaround that has captured the attention of the local community.

Ryan Perrins, 33, and his husband Dr Ben Colliver, 34, took over the troubled pub in November 2022. At the time, the establishment was plagued by issues, including pest problems and problematic customers. The couple faced the daunting task of transforming a venue where drug use was openly happening on the bar counter into a safe and welcoming space.
Their efforts have paid off spectacularly. Today, The Milestone is a thriving community hub that hosts a variety of activities, including craft clubs, reiki healing sessions, and even operates a foodbank to support local residents in need. The pub now attracts around 35 people to its safe space club and regularly hosts charity events, according to the owners.

The transformation has earned The Milestone a place in the final six of the Best Community Pub category at this year's Great British Pub Awards. The final will take place at Leeds' First Direct Arena on September 23, where the winner will be announced.
"We're just over the moon," said Ryan. "To get into the top six is just an achievement from all the pubs that are entering."
