More than twenty drivers faced consequences during a targeted road safety crackdown in the heart of Birmingham this week.
Operation Advance Targets City Centre Drivers
On Tuesday, December 16, officers from West Midlands Police conducted Operation Advance, a dedicated multi-agency initiative focused on improving safety. The operation, led by the force's Road Harm Prevention Team, resulted in 22 vehicles being stopped and taken to a site in the city centre for thorough checks.
Stolen Cars, No Insurance and Illegal Modifications
A significant number of the vehicles were found to be in breach of the law. Police confirmed that two of the cars had been reported stolen and will be returned to their rightful owners. A further four vehicles were seized on the spot for having no insurance.
Notably, a single issue accounted for almost half of all the stops. Ten drivers were found to have illegally tinted windows on their vehicles, a modification that can severely impair vision, especially at night or in poor weather.
Mobile Phones and Seatbelts Also in Focus
The operation also addressed other common traffic offences. Three motorists were dealt with for using their mobile phones while driving, and two were penalised for not wearing a seatbelt.
Police emphasised that the operation brought together various partners with the shared goal of keeping the region's roads safe for everyone.
This action coincides with the national Christmas anti-drink and drug drive campaign, Operation Limit. Officers are warning drivers that they are highly trained to spot impairment and have the technology to test for it. The message is clear: if you are over the limit, you will be arrested.
The public is urged to report anyone they suspect of regularly driving under the influence by calling 101, or anonymously via Crimestoppers. In an emergency where someone is in immediate danger, 999 should be called.
