291 Dog Thefts in West Midlands, Only 4 Prosecutions

A Freedom of Information request has revealed that West Midlands Police investigated 291 dog thefts between 2022 and 2025, yet only four prosecutions were brought during that period. The data shows 2022 was the worst year, with 98 thefts reported. In 114 cases, no suspect was identified, and in 169 cases, evidence issues prevented progress. Prosecutions occurred in 2023 (two cases), 2024 (one), and 2025 (one). The Metropolitan Police warned that criminals target dogs for profit. Owners are advised to fit collars and tags and check with friends or relatives before reporting a theft.
