Birmingham recorded 5,439 motor vehicle thefts in 2025, the highest among all West Midlands Police (WMP) local policing areas, according to newly released data. The figures, covering January to December last year, show that vehicle crime remains a significant concern for residents and authorities alike.
Monthly Breakdown Reveals Peak in October
Offences were relatively consistent throughout the year, but January saw the lowest count at 381, while October had the highest at 487. The monthly figures are as follows: January 381, February 390, March 432, April 476, May 483, June 421, July 451, August 484, September 459, October 487, November 462, and December 423.
In comparison, other areas in the West Midlands recorded lower totals: Coventry 1,146, Dudley 1,443, Sandwell 1,549, Solihull 1,070, and Wolverhampton 1,051. An additional 51 records were logged with a 'not recorded' local policing authority.
Police Response and Prevention Advice
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We fully understand the inconvenience and distress which vehicle crime causes. It can prevent people from carrying out their daily activities and also impacts livelihoods. This is why we continue to target those involved and make sure they are punished for their crimes. As part of our ongoing work we have specific teams with a focus on tackling vehicle crime so we can arrest and prosecute those involved."
The spokesperson added: "Through the diligence and investigative work of our officers we have been able to identify car thieves and secure convictions and jail terms. There are ways you can help protect your vehicle from thieves. You can read our advice here."
