A 94-year-old grandfather from Birmingham has described how he thought he was going to die after being attacked in his own home. The elderly man was strangled, kicked, and beaten by a man and a woman during the incident on Griffins Brook Road in Bournville.
The attack occurred on Monday, June 8, at approximately 2:30 PM. According to the victim's family, he was ambushed by the pair, who then brutally assaulted him before stealing money from his pockets.
Suspects Arrested and Bailed
A 59-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman were arrested in connection with the attack but have since been released on bail while investigations continue.
The victim's family believe the woman had befriended the pensioner over the past year, regularly asking for money. She allegedly told him not to inform his relatives. The family discovered the situation after a neighbor revealed the woman had claimed the man owed her money.
When the family advised the grandfather to stop giving money, the woman allegedly returned with an accomplice and attacked him.
Family's Account
The man's granddaughter shared details of the ordeal: "My grandfather was ambushed in his home and beaten, kicked, strangled, and hit over the head. When he was being strangled, he said he thought he was going to die."
She added that the woman had been pleading poverty and receiving between £30 and £50 each time. After the family intervened, the woman came to his house last Monday, and he told her to go away. She then returned with an accomplice and carried out the attack.
The granddaughter also noted that the victim had strangulation marks on his neck and that even police officers were shocked by the incident.
Police Investigation
A West Midlands Police spokesperson confirmed: "We are investigating a burglary at an address in Bournville where an elderly man was assaulted and cash was stolen. Thankfully, his injuries were not life-changing, but he was understandably shaken."
The suspects were arrested on suspicion of burglary and have been bailed as enquiries continue. Police are following several lines of enquiry and remain in contact with the victim and his family.
