Birmingham City councillor Siobhan Harper-Nunes will stand trial next year after denying assaults on five people, including three police officers. The 66-year-old, who was elected as a Green Party councillor for Ladywood in May, entered not guilty pleas to three counts of assaulting a police officer and two counts of assault by beating.

Harper-Nunes appeared at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, September 17, for a 15-minute hearing where she spoke only to confirm her name, address, and enter her pleas. She was charged by West Midlands Police in August following an incident on August 6 that led to officers being called to the junction of Monument Road and Hagley Road in Edgbaston.
The councillor, of Monument Road in Birmingham, wore a long beige jacket and a black suit during the proceedings. District Judge Michelle Smith scheduled a trial lasting a day-and-a-half on July 19 and 20, 2027. Harper-Nunes was allowed to remain on unconditional bail.
Political Background and Suspension
Following the assault charges, Harper-Nunes was suspended from the Green Party and is now listed as an independent councillor on the Birmingham City Council website. She also ran as the Green Party candidate for West Midlands mayor in 2024.
The trial will determine the outcome of the five assault charges, which involve three police officers and two other individuals. The case has drawn attention due to Harper-Nunes’s role as an elected official and her previous mayoral candidacy.
