A Birmingham cocaine dealer has been sentenced to over two years in prison after police officers discovered drugs hidden under an ashtray during a routine traffic stop.
Traffic Stop Leads to Major Discovery
Dragomir Bonculescu, aged 22 and from Handsworth, was intercepted by officers from Staffordshire Police's major and organised crime team in Chadsmoor, Staffordshire, in August last year. The incident occurred as Bonculescu was exiting the driver's seat of a vehicle that he was neither insured to drive nor held a valid licence for.
Concealed Cocaine Uncovered
Upon searching the car, police uncovered an estimated £1,120 worth of cocaine, which had been meticulously sorted into individual deal bags. The drugs were found concealed beneath an ashtray within the vehicle, demonstrating a deliberate attempt to hide the illicit substances from law enforcement.
In addition to the cocaine, officers seized cash and mobile phones from the scene, further strengthening the case against Bonculescu. During his subsequent interview in custody, he opted to answer no comment to all questions posed by investigators.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
Despite his initial silence, police successfully compiled sufficient evidence to bring charges against Bonculescu. He later appeared at Stafford Crown Court, where he changed his plea to guilty on Monday, January 19.
Bonculescu admitted to multiple offences, including:
- Possession with intent to supply cocaine
- Possessing criminal property
- Driving a vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence
- Using a vehicle without third-party insurance
As a result, he was sentenced to two years and one month behind bars, marking a significant victory for local law enforcement efforts.
Police Commitment to Combating Organised Crime
Staffordshire Police have emphasised their ongoing dedication to targeting individuals involved in organised criminal activities within local communities. Drug dealing, in particular, is often linked to the exploitation of vulnerable individuals who are coerced into selling drugs on behalf of career criminals for profit.
Authorities encourage the public to report any suspected drug dealing in their area by calling 101 or using the Live Chat feature on the police website. For those wishing to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111.
