Two men from Birmingham are among four people arrested after Warwickshire Police uncovered a 47-plant cannabis grow hidden behind a reinforced door inside a nail bar in Leamington. The discovery came on September 16, following an initial raid on a house on Grosvenor Road, Leamington, where officers found a cannabis crop in the loft and evidence that the electricity had been bypassed.
Officers from the Warwick and Leamington Safer Neighbourhood Teams then visited a business linked to the property owners, a nail bar on Regent Street, to attempt arrests. During a search of the premises, they found nearly 50 plants growing behind a reinforced door leading to the basement.
Mystery door revealed cannabis grow
Describing the find, officers said: "In the basement, there was a door that didn’t look right. Inside the door, was another door. Inside that door, a thin wall – and the tell tale hum of fans and lighting. After a bit of encouragement, the mystery doors gave way to the bright, golden light of a 47-plant cannabis grow."
The force confirmed that the electricity had been bypassed at the Grosvenor Road property, and equipment consistent with a cannabis grow was found in the loft, along with a sizable quantity of cannabis. However, the grow itself was no longer operational at the time of the visit.
Four arrests made
Four people were arrested in connection with the investigation. A 36-year-old woman from Leamington and a 45-year-old man from Birmingham were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of cannabis. A 32-year-old man from Birmingham and a 43-year-old man from Leamington were detained on suspicion of production of cannabis.
The 36-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of abstracting electricity. All four individuals were taken into custody following the searches.
Police statement on the operation
In a statement, Warwickshire Police said: "On 16 September, our Warwick and Leamington SNT officers visited a house on Grosvenor Road in Leamington, after reports led them to believe there was a cannabis grow on the inside. We discovered that the electricity had been bypassed, there was equipment in line with a cannabis grow in the loft, and a sizable quantity of cannabis. However, the grow itself was no longer running."
The statement continued: "We visited a business linked to the owners of the property, a nail bar on Leamington’s Regent Street, to attempt arrests of the occupants. In the basement, behind a reinforced pair of doors, we discovered a 47-plant cannabis grow. We have arrested four people – a 36-year-old woman from Leamington and a 45-year-old man from Birmingham on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of cannabis, and a 32-year-old man from Birmingham and a 43-year-old man from Leamington on suspicion of production of cannabis."
The investigation remains ongoing, with all four suspects having been arrested and taken into police custody for questioning.
