Section 60 stop-and-search powers will remain in force in parts of Birmingham until 2am on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31, following the death of a man stabbed in Hodge Hill.
The man, locally named as Zeeshan Shaukat, was attacked on Tuesday and died in hospital three days later. Police believe the stabbing was a "targeted attack" and no arrests have been made in connection with the murder.
Area covered by the extended powers
The Section 60 powers cover Washwood Heath, Stechford, Duddeston, Ward End and Alum Rock. Under these powers, officers can stop and search individuals without needing reasonable grounds.
The extension comes after a series of weapons seizures in the area. Last night, while the powers were already in place, officers recovered two machetes from a vehicle in Adderley Road. A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and possession of a knife.
Weapons seized and arrests made
On Friday, a firearm and other weapons were recovered by officers, and three men were charged with weapons offences. These actions form part of a wider operation to remove dangerous weapons from Birmingham's streets.
Birmingham Neighbourhood Chief Inspector Chanelle Whitney said: "We are pleased these powers have led to dangerous weapons being taken off the streets, and we continue to work with the community to listen to their concerns and act on intelligence."
Police vow to continue patrols
Chief Inspector Whitney added: "Weapons and violence have no place in Birmingham or anywhere in the West Midlands, and we are targeting those involved in it. We are clear anyone found carrying a weapon or intent on violence will be dealt with and brought to justice."
Patrols are continuing around the area as police work to keep the public safe and prevent disorder.
