Police have launched an appeal for information after a couple was targeted by thieves in a bizarre interaction on a supermarket car park in Staffordshire. The incident occurred at Sainsbury's on the Orbital Retail Centre in Cannock.
The Incident
At around 3pm on Friday, June 5, a man approached the couple as they were leaving the store. He claimed that a cyclist had hit their car and directed them to inspect the alleged damage. While the couple was distracted, a second man attempted to steal a handbag from inside their vehicle.
However, the couple noticed the second man inside the car, and both suspects fled the scene on foot. Nothing was taken, and there was no damage to the vehicle.
Suspect Descriptions
According to Staffordshire Police, the suspects are described as being between 30 and 40 years old. One of them was wearing a bucket hat, sunglasses, and a jacket.
Police Appeal
A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "We are appealing for information after a man and woman were targeted by thieves on the car park of a supermarket in Cannock. At around 3pm on Friday 5 June, a man approached a couple as they left Sainsbury’s on the Orbital Retail Centre on Voyager Drive. The man said someone had hit the husband and wife’s car with a bicycle and went around the back of the vehicle to show them damage. At the same time another unknown man tried to steal a handbag from inside the car. The couple saw the man inside the car and both suspects left the scene on foot. Nothing was taken and there was no damage to the vehicle. The suspects are described as aged between 30 and 40. One was wearing a bucket hat, sunglasses and a jacket. We’re keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have relevant dashcam footage."
