A pupil brought a blade into a Birmingham primary school, marking the second weapon incident in a matter of months. The child showed a box cutter, which belonged to a family member, to a fellow pupil at Paget Primary School in Pype Hayes on Wednesday, May 13.
The school confirmed that the blade was not exposed at any point, there was no threat to either pupils or staff, and the situation was dealt with immediately. Parents described it as another concerning incident, following a separate knife incident in October last year where a pupil showed a knife to a small number of classmates.
School Response
In a letter to parents, acting headteacher Lis Dodd stated: A pupil brought a box cutter belonging to a family member onto the school site. The item was shown to another pupil, but at no point was the blade exposed nor was there any threat to either pupils or staff. The matter was dealt with immediately by staff in line with our safeguarding and behaviour procedures. Following a full risk assessment, additional support measures will also be put in place for the individual concerned.
Dodd added: Please be assured the safety and wellbeing of pupils and staff remains our absolute priority. Staff responded quickly and appropriately and there was no risk to pupils at any stage.
Ongoing Safety Measures
The school said it would continue to work closely with external agencies, including West Midlands Police, to provide workshops and learning opportunities around personal safety, responsible choices and safeguarding.
