BMW Driver Sentenced to Life for Deliberate Murder of Father in Rednal
A BMW driver who intentionally drove into a father as he walked with his twin brother has been jailed for life at Birmingham Crown Court. Michael Povey, 29, was sentenced on Friday, 10 April 2026, after being found guilty of murder and pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice.
Fatal Incident on Ormscliffe Road
The tragic event occurred around 5:10 pm on July 21, 2025, on Ormscliffe Road in Rednal. Lee Baker, 28, was walking with his brother following an argument with three other men. Unbeknownst to them, Povey had heard about the disagreement and set out to find the pair.
Povey deliberately drove his powerful BMW onto the pavement, striking Lee Baker and causing traumatic head injuries that proved fatal. Fortunately, Lee's brother managed to jump out of the way and avoid serious harm. After hitting Lee, Povey mounted the pavement further, collided with a front garden wall, and then fled the scene on foot.
Deceptive 999 Call and Police Investigation
In an attempt to cover his tracks, Povey called emergency services shortly after the incident, claiming his car had been stolen by a "yob" and expressing fear about returning to the area because "someone had been hurt." This tissue of lies was quickly unraveled by West Midlands Police during their thorough investigation.
Police discovered that only minutes after running over Lee Baker, Povey had walked past the crime scene without the high visibility vest he had been wearing earlier. Povey, who had no fixed address, was found guilty of murder on February 6, 2026, and had already pleaded guilty to perverting the course of public justice.
Court Sentencing and Family Tribute
At Birmingham Crown Court, Judge Justice Harrison handed down a life imprisonment sentence with a minimum term of 20 years before parole consideration. The court heard how Povey's actions were calculated and deliberate, showing complete disregard for human life.
In a moving tribute to Lee Baker, his family released a statement saying: "We know Lee has gone and we would love to see him or hold him just one more time, but we can't. He has been taken from us forever. He will be missed and loved forever."
The family described Lee as a devoted father whose life was cut tragically short by Povey's violent actions. They expressed gratitude to West Midlands Police for their diligent work in bringing the perpetrator to justice.
Community Impact and Safety Concerns
The incident has raised serious concerns about pedestrian safety in residential areas of Birmingham. Local residents have expressed shock at the deliberate nature of the attack, which occurred on a quiet residential street during early evening hours.
West Midlands Police have emphasized their commitment to investigating violent crimes thoroughly and bringing offenders to justice. The successful prosecution of Michael Povey demonstrates their determination to protect communities from such senseless acts of violence.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from road rage and intentional vehicle attacks. Authorities continue to urge witnesses to come forward with information about similar incidents to help prevent future tragedies.
