Viral Video Sparks Calls for Transparency
West Midlands Police is under pressure to release body-camera footage after a video of an arrest on Broad Street in Birmingham went viral on social media. The footage, reportedly from June 21, shows a man being attacked by a group of men before a female police officer intervenes. The man is seen swinging his arm and hitting the officer in the head after being pushed to the ground.
The force confirmed that one man, Cody Harper, 20, has been charged with assaulting a police officer and is set to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on July 23. However, the group of men involved in the initial assault walked away, and police have launched an investigation to identify them.
Political Reaction and Public Concern
Robert Jenrick, the Reform UK MP, responded to the incident online, telling The Telegraph: “If there’s additional footage that explains why the officer acted as she did, it should be shared immediately to clear things up. Otherwise the public will rightly question the clear unequal treatment by the police. The police have lost the benefit of the doubt in the eyes of many. They’ve had enough of two-tier policing. Reform UK is the only party consistently calling this nonsense out and has the people to fix it.”
West Midlands Police initially stated they had reviewed the incident and had no concerns about the officer’s actions, describing them as “reasonable and proportionate.” However, they later acknowledged an assault had taken place and are now actively investigating.
Police Statement and Investigation
A police spokesperson said: “We are carrying out an investigation to identify people involved in an assault in Birmingham city centre. At around 1.30am on Sunday 21 June, officers were on Broad Street where they arrested a 20-year-old man who has since been charged with assaulting a police officer. We are aware of footage on social media showing the incident before the man is arrested. Recognising that an assault has taken place we are now carrying out active enquiries to identify those involved. Although officers were in the area when this assault took place, they were involved in the arrest of another man at the time. Anyone who witnessed the assault is asked to get in touch with us.”
The incident has reignited debates about policing tactics and transparency, with calls for the release of body-camera footage to clarify the sequence of events.
