Car Cannibals Strike Again: Fans' Cars Stripped Outside St Andrew's Stadium
Car cannibals strip fans' cars outside St Andrew's

Police have launched an urgent investigation after a spate of brazen car thefts left football fans devastated outside Birmingham's St Andrew's Knighthead Park stadium.

Match Day Mayhem for Blues Supporters

The so-called 'car cannibals' struck on Monday, December 29, while Birmingham City played out a 1-1 draw against Southampton. Supporters returned to parked vehicles that had been ruthlessly stripped for parts.

One victim, lifelong Blues fan David Salliss, 58, found his family Peugeot 208 decimated on Trinity Terrace. The car's bonnet and bumper were missing. Shockingly, this was the second time his family had been targeted, with his wife's Peugeot stripped in an almost identical incident on Boxing Day 2023.

Mr Salliss expressed his frustration, revealing that an attending police officer had remarked on the thieves' astonishing speed, comparing their efficiency to a "Formula 1 pit stop team." He has urged West Midlands Police to increase patrols in the streets surrounding the ground.

A Warning Echoes Across Social Media

The crime wave has prompted urgent warnings from other fans. Southampton supporter Steve Ridgley took to social media platform X to share his friend's ordeal, which occurred on Garrison Street.

His post served as a stark alert: "Football fans visiting St Andrews, do not park your car around this street." The incident has highlighted a persistent problem in the area, leaving many questioning their matchday safety.

Police Response and Safety Plea

The thefts occurred just hours after West Midlands Police had announced dedicated matchday patrols to crack down on vehicle crime. The force has confirmed an active investigation is now underway.

A police spokesperson stated: "We take this type of crime extremely seriously as we don't underestimate the impact it has on vehicle owners." They emphasised that their dedicated operation, in partnership with Birmingham City Football Club, is continuing.

The force has issued the following advice to all drivers:

  • Park in safe, well-lit areas where possible.
  • Report any suspicious activity near vehicles immediately by calling 999.
  • Follow the latest safe parking guidance on the police website.

Fans are being urged to remain vigilant and report all instances of crime to help authorities develop a more effective patrol strategy for future matches.
