The final moments of Chereiss Bailey's life were captured on CCTV as she pushed her killer in his wheelchair near his home in West Bromwich, hours before he strangled her and his daughter helped dump her body in the Walsall Canal.
John Anslow, 65, was found guilty of murder following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court. He had already admitted preventing the lawful and decent burial of a body. His daughter, Hayley-marie Ferguson, 42, of Heronville Road, West Bromwich, was found guilty of preventing the lawful and decent burial of Ms Bailey's body as well as assisting an offender.
The last sighting of Chereiss Bailey
On September 27 last year, CCTV captured Anslow meeting Ms Bailey, a 36-year-old mother, in Great Bridge Street in West Bromwich. She could later be seen pushing him in his wheelchair near his bungalow in Stour Street. It was the last time she was seen alive.
Anslow presented himself as disabled, but in reality he was a violent predator previously jailed for raping underage girls on two occasions. He violently killed Ms Bailey inside his home, leaving her with bruises to her body and bite marks to intimate areas. She had also been strangled.
Killer's claims rejected
It was not known why Anslow attacked her. He later claimed to police that she had stolen his money and he accidentally killed her in self-defence during a struggle. However, he declined to take to the witness box at his trial to give evidence about his account.
On the morning of September 28 last year, Anslow called his daughter Hayley-marie Ferguson. She caught a taxi to his home, bringing paving slabs with her. She helped with an initial clean-up of the address but later that night went to a Peaky Blinders fancy dress event as if nothing had happened.
Body dumped in Walsall Canal
Ferguson later returned to her father's home. CCTV then captured the father and daughter pushing Ms Bailey's body in Anslow's wheelchair. It had been dressed in different clothing. They wheeled the remains to the Walsall Canal near the bridge on Ryders Green Road.
Ms Bailey's body was tied to paving slabs and dumped in the water, where police recovered it on October 7. Ferguson was not alleged to have been involved in Ms Bailey's killing. The pair will be sentenced at a later date.
