Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre Still Plagued by Anti-Social Behaviour Despite Extra Powers
Traders at Chelmsley Wood shopping centre in Solihull are reporting that anti-social behaviour continues unabated, despite the implementation of a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) nearly a year ago. The PSPO was introduced by Solihull Council last summer around the bus interchange and nearby fast-food outlets, including KFC and McDonald's, in response to serious incidents such as knife threats, vandalism, fights, and dangerous e-bike use.
Persistent Issues and Trader Concerns
Roger Cufflin, owner of Munch Cards and Gifts, highlighted ongoing problems, stating, "Only last Saturday we had to get security involved due to a kid on a bike wearing a balaclava circling the area." The PSPO specifically bans e-bikes in the restricted zone and empowers police to disperse groups of three or more individuals during nighttime hours. Breaches of the order can result in fines of up to £2,500.
A female trader shared her heightened fears, revealing that she no longer ventures out alone at night and has stopped wearing jewellery for safety reasons. Another trader expressed skepticism about the PSPO's effectiveness, saying, "I don't think it has deterred them." These accounts underscore the ongoing challenges faced by local businesses despite the council's efforts.

West Midlands Police have confirmed that 66 individuals are currently undergoing the PSPO enforcement process, which includes educational measures, formal warnings, and potential prosecution for repeat offenders.
