Emergency services were called to land off Strawberry Lane in Cheslyn Hay, near Cannock, shortly before 9am on Saturday (September 5) after reports of a child in cardiac arrest. Despite the response of multiple resources, including the Midlands Air Ambulance, the child was pronounced dead by paramedics a short time later.
Police treat death as unexplained
West Midlands Ambulance Service alerted Staffordshire Police to the incident, which occurred in Great Wyrley, at 8.45am. Officers attended alongside the air ambulance, and the child's death is currently being treated as unexplained.
A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: “We were called to land off Strawberry Lane, Great Wyrley, at 8.45am today (Saturday 5 September) by colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service, who were responding to a report of a child in cardiac arrest.
“Officers attended alongside [the] Midlands Air Ambulance. Sadly, the child was pronounced dead by paramedics a short time later. The death is currently being treated as unexplained. Officers remain at the scene.”
Community reaction and road closures
Roads were shut in the area as police carried out investigations. South Staffordshire District Councillor Robert Duncan posted online, acknowledging the impact on the community.
“I know how deeply upsetting news like this is for our community,” he said. “It’s important that we allow the emergency services the space they need to complete their work with dignity and care. As soon as the full and confirmed details are formally shared with me, I will provide a further update to residents. Until then, please avoid speculation and allow the family and responders the privacy and respect they deserve.”
The tragic death has prompted an outpouring of grief on the police’s Facebook page. Emily Jones commented: “How awful for all involved. Condolences to the family, friends and all services involved.” Lee Murphy added: “Thinking of the family at this horrific time, how awful.” Kez Parkes wrote: “My heart goes out to all involed x x rip little one x.”

Police officers remain at the scene while inquiries continue into the circumstances of the child's death. The cause has not been confirmed, and the death is being treated as unexplained pending further investigation.
