Ravi Chettri, a 39-year-old father of two, was told he faces prison after being caught driving at 35mph in a 30mph zone on the A452 Chester Road, Erdington, on April 30. The offence was aggravated because Chettri, of Milton Street, West Bromwich, was banned from driving at the time.
At Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, September 1, Chettri pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, speeding, and driving without insurance. The court heard that he was caught after a speed camera detected the blue Honda he was driving. A notice was sent to the registered vehicle, but the driver's details were inconsistent, according to prosecutor Ms Begum.
Court hears of enforcement camera investigation
Ms Begum told the court: "As a result of the discrepancy, an examination of the enforcement camera was carried out and revealed a sole male driver, which was identified as the defendant." During the subsequent interview, Chettri made a full admission that he was the driver and informed authorities that he was disqualified.
Chettri's solicitor, Mr Khan, mitigating, pointed out that his client had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity. He said: "When speaking to the police, he made full admissions. It was a single incident on April 30, he was speeding at 35 in a 30mph zone."
Previous disqualification and aggravated offence
The court heard that Chettri had been banned from driving for six years in January 2024 for 'failure to provide a specimen'. The chair of the Magistrates' bench said: "We are going to send you to prison for a total of 26 weeks, this will be suspended on the condition you are not convicted of another offence in those two years." The suspended sentence was imposed because the offence was aggravated by previous convictions.
In addition to the suspended prison sentence, Chettri was disqualified from driving for a further 12 months. This extends his total disqualification to four years and four months, running until January 2031. He was also ordered to pay a total of £239 to the court.
