A driver has been charged with a series of serious offences following a fatal road traffic collision in Birmingham that claimed the life of a pedestrian and left another with serious injuries.
Charges Laid After Handsworth Collision
Harinderpal Athwal, 41, of Sorrel Close in Oldbury, is set to appear in court accused of causing death by dangerous driving. The charges also include failing to stop at the scene of an accident and causing death by driving while disqualified and uninsured.
Athwal faces additional counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to report a road traffic collision. He was remanded in custody and was due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Thursday, December 18.
Details of the Soho Road Incident
The incident occurred on Soho Road in Handsworth, close to the junction with Whitehall Road, at approximately 11:20am on Tuesday, December 16. Emergency services, including three ambulances, two paramedic officers and a critical care car, were dispatched following a call at 11:17am.
Upon arrival, crews discovered a 54-year-old male pedestrian in a critical condition. Despite administering advanced life support at the scene, he was pronounced dead.
A 47-year-old woman, also a pedestrian, was treated for serious injuries at the location before being transported under emergency conditions to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Selly Oak. Her injuries, while serious, are not believed to be life-threatening.
Ongoing Police Investigation and Appeal
West Midlands Police have confirmed their investigation into the tragic crash is continuing. A spokesperson reiterated an appeal for information from the public.
"We're continuing to appeal for anyone with information about the collision, near the junction with Whitehall Road, shortly before 11.20am on Tuesday," the spokesperson said.
They have asked anyone with dashcam footage, mobile phone video, or any other information that could assist the inquiry to contact the force. Witnesses should call 101, quoting incident reference number 1819 of 16 December.
The local community has already begun to pay tribute, with flowers laid at the scene on Soho Road and a minute's silence observed in memory of the victim.
