A driver high on cocaine has been sentenced to six years in prison after causing a fatal collision that killed a much-loved father-of-three.
A Tragic Collision on Pershore Lane
Andy Hirons, a 52-year-old from Evesham, was riding his motorbike on the A4538 Pershore Lane in Worcestershire in August 2024 when he was struck by a BMW car. Police bodycam footage captured the frantic aftermath as officers rushed to the scene following a desperate 999 call.
The driver of the BMW, 31-year-old Joshua Smith, was found to have been under the influence of cocaine at the time of the crash. His vehicle was also in an unroadworthy condition. Smith was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court on Thursday, 14 January 2026.
A Family's Devastating Loss
Following the sentencing, Andy's wife of 30 years, Tracey, paid a moving tribute to her husband. She described Andy as a "strong, reliable and lovable man who was the life and soul of the family."
"Andy was my whole life and father to our three children," Tracey said. "The impact of his life being taken away so cruelly and suddenly has been particularly upsetting for our eldest daughter, who has Down Syndrome. She now lives in constant fear whenever I leave the house."
Tracey spoke of the immense void left by her husband's death, stating she now feels "empty" and has lost all confidence. "This man’s criminal actions have taken away the best days of our lives," she added.
A Life of Service and Dedication
Andy Hirons was a keen motorcyclist who had bought his bike for his 50th birthday. He was a devoted family man and a retained firefighter for eight years, dedicating much of his life to serving his community.
"He was the sort of person you always wanted in your corner, to have your back. His loyalty and dedication were second to none," Tracey recalled. "His mind was like the font of all knowledge."
The tragedy has robbed Andy of future milestones, including his son's wedding and the birth of his fourth grandchild. Tracey now faces the challenge of caring for their daughter alone, while also dealing with the financial strain following the loss of her husband's support.
The court's decision brings a form of legal closure, but for Tracey Hirons and her family, the sentence cannot fill the hole left by a beloved husband and father.
