A man has been sentenced to a significant prison term after being caught establishing a drug supply line on the very day he was released from custody, according to court proceedings.
Immediate Return to Criminal Activity
Esten Bennett, aged 32 and of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of class A drugs, specifically crack cocaine, at Shrewsbury Crown Court. The court heard that Bennett demonstrated a clear determination to resume illegal activities immediately upon his release from prison on Tuesday, January 13.
Police Surveillance and Arrest
On Wednesday, March 4, plain-clothes officers conducting a patrol near Constitutional Hill in Wellington observed Bennett entering an address. After a short period, he departed in a vehicle, which officers then followed. The pursuit concluded at Hadley Park Services, where Bennett was stopped and arrested.
A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered a wrap of class A drugs, £170 in cash, and a mobile phone directly linked to an active drugs line. Further police investigations connected Bennett to this line, which had been operational since his release date.
Scale of the Operation
During the approximately seven weeks the line was active, it facilitated the distribution of drugs across Telford and into Wales. West Mercia Police estimated that around 200 grams of substances were sold through this network, highlighting the significant reach and impact of Bennett's criminal enterprise.
Sentencing and Police Response
At Shrewsbury Crown Court on Wednesday, April 8, Bennett was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison. Detective Sergeant Andy Pond of West Mercia Police commented on the case, stating, "Bennett showed a clear determination to return to criminality, setting up a drugs line on the day he was released from prison. His actions fuelled the supply of harmful class A drugs across Telford and beyond, and this sentence reflects the seriousness of that offending."
He further emphasized the police's ongoing commitment, adding, "We remain dedicated to disrupting drug networks and bringing those responsible before the courts. This case demonstrates that offenders who persist in causing harm to our communities will be identified, arrested, and dealt with robustly."
