The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has confirmed a crackdown on drivers breaking waste disposal laws, with motorists now risking having their vehicles seized and their licences stripped if found guilty of fly-tipping. The warning comes after a joint operation between the DVSA and the Environment Agency in the North East of England.
Joint Operation Targets Waste Carriers
On July 6 and 7, Environment Agency officers stopped vehicles carrying waste in Carlisle, alongside inspections at three waste sites. The operation uncovered multiple breaches of legal requirements for waste carriers. Aaron Wood, an Environment Agency Waste Team Leader in Cumbria and Lancashire, issued a stark warning: "Waste crime causes real harm to communities and together with other agencies we are determined to stop it."
Wood added: "Joint partnership operations such as this helps us disrupt operations across the waste sector and gather intelligence. Where we find evidence of suspected illegal activity or breaches of regulation, we will not hesitate to take action."
Multi-Agency Collaboration
The Environment Agency also collaborated with the Joint Unit for Waste Crime (JUWC) and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) to conduct checks at three permitted waste sites. Officers visited North West Recycling Limited at Rockliffe Estate, Carlisle, and JJC Hire Limited and Sinkfall Recycling, both in Barrow in Furness, over the two-day period. The compliance inspections focused on whether the sites were meeting the conditions of their environmental permits, with follow-up actions to be taken where appropriate.
Vehicles Seized in Ongoing Investigation
Ben Hocking, Area Environment Manager at the Environment Agency, said in a statement: "Our investigation into this disgusting illegal dumping continues at pace. We are following a number of leads and this has included seizing an HGV connected to waste movements. Waste crime will not be tolerated and we'll continue to work closely with our partners to track down those involved."
The crackdown underscores the serious consequences for drivers and waste operators who flout the law. As well as vehicle seizure, offenders can now face licence revocation, reflecting the government's determination to tackle waste crime and its harmful impact on communities and the environment.
