Residents living near a Midlands school have expressed their anger over daily traffic chaos, describing the school run as resembling a 'Formula 1 pit-lane' due to reckless driving and poor parking. The situation has become so severe that police have had to intervene.
Police Involvement After Collisions
Derbyshire Constabulary's safer neighbourhood team issued a warning to drivers after two separate collisions occurred within minutes of each other outside Kilburn Primary School. Both incidents caused significant disruption, highlighting ongoing issues with unsafe parking during school drop-off and pick-up times.
Officers reminded drivers not to park on the school's entrance, along zig-zag marks and solid white lines, or in spots that restrict visibility or traffic flow. The force stated: 'Parking on zig-zags or solid white lines is an offence and creates serious risks at an already busy location. These restrictions are in place to protect children, parents, pedestrians and other road users.'
Residents Speak Out
Sarah Jennings, who lives along Highfield Road, said: 'Even at the best of times, I’ve seen road rage, near misses and queues. It’s relentless. People just seem to care only about themselves. They’d rather save five seconds and hold everyone else up for five minutes than simply let someone out. I find it infuriating. Another thing is, so many people have these great huge cars and don’t know how to drive them. The road wouldn’t be an issue if people knew the width of their own cars, or even how to reverse, which some people think is impossible.'
Another resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, said they are glad they live within walking distance to avoid driving. They commented: 'Selfish, horrible drivers honking their horns all the time and often bullying people. It’s the usual BMW and Audi drivers. More money than sense, some of them. Come here after 3pm and it changes. It’s like an F1 pit lane, people running around all over the place and cars all over the pavements. It’s embarrassing and I’m glad the police have taken note - but they need to come and spend the afternoon here. They’d make a fortune fining people.'
School's Response
Kilburn Junior School headteacher Rob Hull acknowledged the issue, stating: 'Traffic congestion is an ongoing issue on the local roads in Kilburn, particularly at drop-off and pick-up time. Whilst most people within the school community park appropriately, in the designated areas within the village, there are unfortunately some people who choose to park where it is most convenient to themselves, often leading to greater congestion and compromising the safety of children and local residents.'
