A solitary floral tribute has been placed at the scene of a fatal stabbing in Sutton Coldfield, as detectives continue to question a suspect. The incident occurred on Chester Road, opposite the entrance to Oscott College, shortly after midnight on Saturday, August 8.
West Midlands Police confirmed that the victim, a man in his 30s, was stabbed and died at the scene. A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and officers have stated they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
Community Pays Respects
The floral tribute, accompanied by a handwritten card, was left by a lamppost near the scene. A neighbour placed the card in a vase to protect it from the elements. The card reads: “I didn’t know you, but wanted to pay my respects. Taken too soon but now carried home by the Angels, Husham Khan, Community campaigner.”
The tribute reflects the shock and sadness felt by local residents, many of whom have expressed their condolences. The police cordon has been removed, but visible signs of blood remain outside the property, underscoring the severity of the attack.
Investigation Underway
A murder investigation is actively progressing, with the suspect still in custody. A CCTV specialist from West Midlands Police was seen arriving at the scene to recover evidence from cameras inside the property. The specialist was met by a detective, with a second detective arriving approximately 45 minutes later. Evidence gathering continued for over an hour.
The property involved is understood to be a house in multiple occupation (HMO), which has seen various residents over time. Neighbours described the two men who lived there as “good boys, quiet” and not problematic. Another neighbour remarked, “It’s not nice for this to happen anywhere.”

Christine Baker, a neighbour, described the harrowing moments when she held the victim’s hand as he lay dying. She said he pleaded, “Help me, help me,” but despite the efforts of medics, he could not be saved. Her account has added a personal and emotional dimension to the community’s grief.
