Four people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a pensioner whose body was discovered inside her burned-out bungalow more than 32 years ago. Doreen Morris, 64, was found dead at her home on the outskirts of Holyhead, Anglesey, in March 1994, in a case that sent shockwaves through the close-knit Welsh port town.
Following a cold-case review launched by North Wales Police in 2024, officers have arrested a man and three women from North Wales in a dramatic breakthrough, according to North Wales Live. The development comes more than three decades after Joseph Carl Westbury was cleared of Mrs Morris's murder at trial in 1995. He had also denied breaking into the widow's Mill Lane property and later took his own life in 2016.
Arrests Follow Forensic Review
Mark Pierce, Senior Review Officer, said: "Forensic results, combined with a detailed review of witness evidence, have provided grounds to interview four people on suspicion of perverting the course of justice as part of the ongoing review of the case." The arrests mark a significant step in the reinvestigation, which has been examining the original evidence with modern techniques.
Pierce added: "Throughout the review our thoughts have been with Mrs. Morris' family, and I hope that this case shows that it doesn't matter how much time has passed we will always seek out new opportunities to get justice for victims and their families." The four individuals are from North Wales and are being questioned in connection with the case.
Family Notified of Developments
Mrs Morris' family have been notified of the developments, according to North Wales Police. The force has urged anyone with information relating to the case to contact them on 101 or alternatively via Crimestoppers, quoting Operation Epose.
The investigation continues as part of the ongoing review, with officers seeking to establish the full circumstances surrounding the pensioner's death and any actions that may have hindered the original investigation. The case remains active, and police have not ruled out further arrests or charges.
