Four men have been convicted of the murder of a gang member who was tortured and set on fire in Birmingham, in a case that has shocked the city. The victim, 24-year-old Kyle Vassell, was attacked in the early hours of June 3, 2023, in the Alum Rock area.
The Attack
Prosecutors said Vassell was lured to a flat, where he was beaten, stabbed, and had boiling water poured over him before being doused in petrol and set alight. He died at the scene from his injuries.
The four defendants — Jordan Quinn, 23, of no fixed address; Liam Joyce, 22, of Alum Rock; and two 17-year-old boys who cannot be named — were found guilty of murder following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court.
Gang Retaliation
The court heard that the attack was in retaliation for a previous incident involving a rival gang. Vassell was associated with the "Birmingham Six" gang, while the attackers were linked to the "Alum Rock Boys".
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence including CCTV footage, phone records, and witness testimony that placed the defendants at the scene. The judge described the attack as "savage and premeditated".
Sentencing
Sentencing is scheduled for Friday, and all four face life sentences. Detective Inspector Jim Colclough, of West Midlands Police, said: "This was a brutal and senseless murder, carried out in a bid to exert power and control. Our thoughts remain with Kyle's family and friends."
Vassell's family paid tribute to him, saying he was "a loving son, brother, and father" and that their lives "will never be the same again".
The case highlights the ongoing issue of gang violence in Birmingham, with police stepping up patrols in the area. The convictions bring a measure of justice for Vassell's loved ones, but the impact of the tragedy will be long-lasting.
