Man Suffers Facial Burns as Garden Bonfire Spirals Out of Control in Staffordshire
A man has been hospitalized with multiple burns after a garden bonfire escalated dangerously out of control in Staffordshire. The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 7, in the Oakamoor area, where the individual sustained significant injuries to his face, neck, and hands.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to the emergency, highlighting that this was one of two similar residential fires in the county in recent days. The second incident took place on Sunday, April 12, in the Gamelow area of Stafford, where a controlled burn spread to a fence. Although the fire was extinguished before crews arrived, the occupier suffered a minor burn that did not require medical treatment.
Fire Service Issues Urgent Safety Plea
In response to these alarming events, Ian Read, the head of Prevent, Protect and Partnerships at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, has issued a stern warning. "As we have seen in recent incidents, bonfires can quickly become out of control and not only damage the environment but put people at risk too," he stated.
Read emphasized the unpredictability of burning waste, noting that fires can spread rapidly, especially when accelerants are involved. "We ask that people avoid burning waste and take rubbish to the local tip instead," he advised. Additionally, he reminded residents that they can pay an annual fee to have their garden waste bin emptied by the council as a safer alternative.

These incidents have sparked heightened concerns about fire safety in residential areas. Firefighters are urging the public to exercise extreme caution when dealing with garden waste and bonfires. The service recommends:
