A nine-year-old schoolgirl has been found dead at a property in Weston-super-Mare, with a teenage boy arrested on suspicion of her murder. The tragic discovery was made just after 6pm on Monday, December 15, at an address on Lime Close.
Police Investigation Underway
Emergency services were called to the scene after paramedics discovered the girl. She was pronounced dead at the address. Avon and Somerset Police have launched a major investigation and a teenage boy remains in custody.
Superintendent Jen Appleford said the force recognised the whole community would be "distraught and shocked" by the "utterly dreadful news". The girl's family were informed on Monday night.
"It is impossible for us to adequately put into words the pain and anguish they are feeling right now," Supt Appleford stated. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to them, and we’ll ensure they receive support from a specially-trained officer."
Appeal to the Community
A police cordon was erected around the house in Lime Close as forensic officers carried out their work. Supt Appleford made a direct appeal to the public.
"Out of respect for the family we’d please ask people not to speculate on the circumstances, or the identities of those involved, because that will only add to their enormous distress," she urged.
The formal identification process and a post-mortem examination are yet to be completed. Police confirmed the criminal investigation is "already well underway" to establish the full facts.
Increased Police Presence
Officers have sought to reassure the local community while continuing their enquiries. "We have no doubt the community will come together as one in response to this tragedy," Supt Appleford added.
An increased police presence is expected in the Weston-super-Mare area in the coming days to provide reassurance. Authorities have stated they are not aware of any increased risk to wider public safety.
"We will ensure our officers are available to provide reassurance and support to all," said Supt Appleford. "We urge anyone with concerns to please speak to us."
