Gunman jailed for 12 years for Wolverhampton subway shooting

A gunman who shot a man in the leg in a Wolverhampton city centre subway has been jailed for 12 years. Tyriq Bingham, 22, of Tangmere Road, Wolverhampton, fired the gun near the underpass on Peel Street at around 3.30pm on October 12 last year.

Victim hospitalised with serious leg injuries

The 20-year-old victim was found by police and rushed to hospital with serious injuries, but survived. Bingham was arrested the following month and later pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. He was jailed on Friday, September 11.

West Midlands Police said: "We were called to reports of a shooting near the underpass on Peel Street, Wolverhampton, at around 3.30pm on October 12. Officers arrived along with ambulance colleagues where they found a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries but thankfully survived."

Investigation by Major Crime Unit

An investigation was launched by the Major Crime Unit (MCU), who carried out multiple enquiries including reviewing CCTV footage of the area. Detectives discovered that the shooting took place in the subway under the A4150.

Bingham was arrested later in the month after multiple enquiries found him to be responsible for the shooting. In August, he pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Police response to 'dangerous incident'

Detective Constable Joe Harris said: "This is a dangerous incident for the victim and those in the area. We will not tolerate violence on our streets and will take robust action against anyone involved in crimes like this."

West Midlands Police added: "A man has been jailed after a man was shot in the leg in Wolverhampton city centre." Bingham was jailed last Friday for 12 years.
