Handsworth Wood Murder: Police Hunt for Teen Suspect

Special police powers have been authorised in Handsworth Wood and surrounding areas following the tragic murder of a 19-year-old man.

Violent Attack Claims Young Life

Yassin Alama, aged 19, was fatally stabbed on Hutton Road at approximately 5.20pm on Sunday, November 16. The violent attack occurred in the street, shocking the local community and prompting a major police response.

Detectives from the West Midlands Police Homicide team have launched a desperate manhunt for the prime suspect, 17-year-old Oumar Traore, who remains at large. Officers have made several attempts to locate and arrest him in the hours since the incident, but these efforts have so far been unsuccessful.

Section 60 Powers in Force Overnight

In response to the ongoing threat, Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 has been enacted. These special powers are in effect from the evening of Monday, November 17, until 7am on Tuesday, November 18.

The authorisation grants officers the ability to stop and search individuals without needing to establish 'reasonable grounds'. The measure covers Handsworth Wood and its vicinity, aiming to prevent further violence and apprehend the suspect.

Extra officers will be on patrol throughout the area overnight. Their role is twofold: to conduct searches under the new powers and to engage with the community, offering reassurance and listening to residents' concerns.

Appeal for Public Assistance

Jenny Birch, a representative from the West Midlands Police Homicide team, addressed the public. "This was a violent attack in the street which has sadly resulted in the death of Yassin," she said. "Yassin’s family have been left absolutely devastated by what has happened - and we're doing everything we can to support them and to give them answers. We need to find and arrest Traore as soon as possible."

The police have issued a clear warning to the public: if anyone sees Oumar Traore, they should not approach him. Instead, they are urged to call 999 immediately, quoting log number 3135 of November 16.
