Hit-and-run kills man, injures woman in Birmingham

A man in his 50s has died and a woman has been seriously injured following a hit-and-run collision in the Handsworth area of Birmingham.

Emergency Response on Soho Road

The incident occurred outside the Pak Supermarket on Soho Road at approximately 11.20am on Tuesday, December 16. A Vauxhall Corsa struck the two pedestrians before the driver fled the scene on foot.

Emergency services, including West Midlands Ambulance Service, responded rapidly. Three ambulances, two paramedic officers, and a critical care car were dispatched to the location after a call at 11.17am.

Despite advanced life support efforts by paramedics at the scene, the man could not be saved and was pronounced dead. His family is now being supported by specially-trained police officers.

Police Investigation and Appeal

The second victim, a woman in her 40s, sustained serious leg injuries. She was treated by ambulance crews before being transported under emergency conditions to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she remains.

West Midlands Police have located the Corsa vehicle near the scene and have launched an investigation. The force has issued a direct appeal for witnesses and footage.

"We would like to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time and saw what happened or has any dashcam or mobile phone footage," a spokesperson said.

Officers are asking the public to quote incident number 1819 of 16 December when calling 101 with any information.

Major Road Closure and Local Disruption

The collision has caused significant disruption in the area. Soho Road remains closed in both directions between the junctions of Grove Lane and Rose Hill Road.

This closure affects both traffic and pedestrians. Key local impacts include:

  • The Number 74 bus service is being diverted.
  • Worshippers accessing a local temple are being directed to use the Rose Hill Road entrance and the entrance nearest the Nishkam Centre.

Police have advised motorists to continue avoiding the area as the forensic investigation continues. Images from the scene showed a forensic tent, a damaged dark-coloured Range Rover, and evidence markers on the pavement.
