Liverpool parade crash suspect in court tears

The man accused of causing a crash during Liverpool FC's Premier League victory parade broke down in emotional distress as jurors were selected for his trial at Liverpool Crown Court.

Emotional Courtroom Scene

Paul Doyle, 54, held his head in his hands and became visibly upset as a panel of more than thirty potential jurors entered the courtroom on Tuesday, November 25. The defendant from Croxteth, Liverpool, faces thirty-one separate offences relating to the incident that occurred on May 26.

Five women and seven men were eventually sworn in to serve on the jury, with two additional women appointed as reserve jurors. The selection process took place before the prosecution was due to open its case on Wednesday, November 26.

Judge's Warning to Jury

Judge Andrew Menary KC directly addressed the newly formed jury, emphasising the particular importance of their role given the significant public attention surrounding the case. He stated the trial concerned Doyle's 'alleged conduct at the Liverpool FC parade'.

The judge gave strict instructions that jurors must base their decisions solely on evidence presented in court and must not conduct their own research or discuss the trial on social media. This warning was issued due to the widespread public knowledge of the incident, which happened as crowds celebrated the football team's title win.

The Charges and The Incident

Before the jury selection, Doyle was rearraigned on four counts that had been amended to reflect medical evidence. He pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.

The thirty-one offences he denies include dangerous driving, affray, seventeen charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, nine counts of causing GBH with intent, and three counts of wounding with intent.

The charges relate to twenty-nine individual victims, who range in age from just six months old to seventy-seven years old. The incident occurred when a Ford Galaxy Titanium collided with crowds on Water Street at approximately 6pm, resulting in more than 130 people reporting injuries.

The jurors were sent home shortly after noon and are expected to return to hear the prosecution outline its case against Paul Doyle.
