Former Colleague Admits Murder of 'Bright Young Star' Steph Irons, 23
Man Admits Murder of Former Colleague Steph Irons

A man has pleaded guilty to murdering his former colleague, a young woman described by her devastated family as a 'bright young star' whose future was cruelly taken away.

Tragic Loss of a Promising Life

Steph Irons, aged just 23, was fatally stabbed at her home address on the evening of Tuesday, October 21. The victim had recently completed both a degree and a masters in clinical psychology and was preparing to apply for her doctorate, with ambitions to become a psychologist.

Her family paid a moving tribute, describing Steph as a 'beautiful, loving and caring daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend' who had 'an infectious smile and laugh which lit up any room'. They emphasised her compassion for others and her tendency to always see good in everybody.

Fatal Attack and Investigation

The defendant, Adedapo Adegbola, aged 40, was motivated to kill Miss Irons following the end of their brief relationship, according to police investigators. The alarm was raised by concerned co-workers who received a series of troubling messages on the evening of the attack.

Emergency services were called to Westdale Lane West in the Mapperley area of Nottingham at 10.07pm, where they discovered Miss Irons wounded in her living room. Despite the immediate efforts of ambulance crews, she was tragically pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterwards.

Detective Inspector Stuart Barson, the lead investigator on the case, stated: 'This is a tragic case in which a caring and compassionate young woman was taken away in horrific circumstances. Following the attack on Miss Irons, Adegbola made no attempt to call for an ambulance, and was concerned only with getting away from the scene and attempting to dispose of vital evidence.'

Flight and Evidence Trail

After the fatal stabbing, Adegbola fled the scene, travelling to properties in Mansfield, Worksop, Sheffield and finally Hull. He left behind a trail of discarded evidence including blood-stained trainers and a jumper on the streets of Mapperley and Carlton.

On the morning of October 22, the defendant returned to Nottingham and handed himself in at Oxclose Police Station, where he was arrested on suspicion of murder. Despite surrendering, Adegbola provided no comment to questions during subsequent police interviews.

Building the Case

Investigators painstakingly compiled crucial evidence against the defendant, using CCTV footage, digital evidence, and witness accounts to track his movements before, during and after the incident. This comprehensive evidence gathering led to Adegbola being charged with murder on Friday, October 24.

Detective Inspector Barson explained: 'Although he initially turned himself in, he went on to provide no comments to police interviews. The evidence compiled against him, though, has left the defendant with no choice but to plead guilty today.'

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

Today, January 26, Adedapo Adegbola appeared at Nottingham Crown Court and formally admitted to the murder of Steph Irons. The defendant, of Westfield Lane in Mansfield, will return to court for sentencing on Thursday, February 5.

The lead investigator expressed his gratitude to Miss Irons' family, saying: 'I want to thank Miss Irons' family for the incredible strength that they have shown through this process. I hope that this outcome assists Steph's family in coming to terms with such a dreadful loss.'

Steph's family concluded their tribute with heartbreaking words: 'Our bright young star has had her future taken away and while we can't comprehend what has happened, she will be forever with us.'
