A man has died after attending a private party at a Birmingham nightspot, prompting a review of the venue's licence.

What Happened?

The man suffered a cardiac arrest at the Arcadian Centre on Hurst Street in the early hours of Monday, May 11. He had been at a private party at the Arcadian City venue earlier that night.

Emergency Response

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called at 2.46am. Paramedics found the man in a critical condition and administered basic life support. Despite their efforts, he was confirmed dead at the scene.

Police Investigation

Police arrived at 3.03am and discovered evidence of drug taking, including a large plate with straws, a card, and a white residue. A field test confirmed the residue was illicit drugs.

Superintendent Karl Thomas said the force had "serious concerns with the operation of this premises and the promotion of the licensing objectives."

Licensing Review

Arcadian City is now subject to a licensing review by Birmingham City Council. The current licence is under review until Friday, June 19, after which a hearing before the licensing committee will be scheduled.

Venue Response

A woman at the venue declined to comment, directing inquiries to the police. West Midlands Police confirmed they are investigating the discovery of suspected illicit drugs at the premises.
