A man has been fined nearly £400 after attempting to teach his 15-year-old brother how to drive on a public road in Perry Barr.

Police Intervention in Gavin Way

Police officers approached a white BMW in Gavin Way, Perry Barr, and discovered a schoolboy behind the wheel. The car's owner, Haaris Farouk, was in the passenger seat and informed officers that he was helping his younger brother learn to drive.

Farouk explained that they were only driving up and down the road in first gear. However, the vehicle was not displaying learner plates, and the driver was only 15 years old.

Court Proceedings

The 23-year-old, from Perry Barr, pleaded guilty to causing the use of a motor vehicle without insurance. At Birmingham Magistrates Court on Tuesday, June 9, he was fined £384 and ordered to pay a £154 victim surcharge and £85 in prosecution costs. He also received six penalty points on his driving licence.

The Chair of the Bench remarked: "We feel you are a person of good character. Perhaps what you did was foolish but not necessarily bad. You have come in and pleaded guilty at the first opportunity."

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred on May 3 this year. Prosecuting, Ruman Dhami stated: "Officers spoke to the passenger, this defendant, who explained he was teaching his brother how to drive. The car was not displaying learner plates. The two occupants of the car have gone in the police vehicle. The driver was 15. He was the brother of this defendant who is the registered keeper of the vehicle."

She added: "He stated he was only teaching his brother how to drive and he had only been in first gear. The officers explained that a vehicle being stationary with the engine running was still classed as driving."

Farouk's Response

Farouk, representing himself, told the court: "I won't do it again, I'm sorry." He also provided information about his earnings, averaging £2,500 per month, to assist with the calculation of the fine.
