Police have launched an investigation after a man in his 20s suffered suspected life-changing injuries in a single-car collision in Smethwick early on Tuesday, August 4. The crash occurred on Oldbury Road at approximately 5am when the vehicle struck a wall.
The driver was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, while a second man who stopped to help was also taken to hospital as a precaution. West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that one of their ambulances came across the car on fire near the junction of the A457 and Oldbury Road at 4.53am.

West Midlands Police were called to the scene shortly before 5am. Officers attended alongside ambulance crews, including two additional ambulances, two paramedic officers, and a MERIT trauma doctor with a critical care paramedic. The driver was treated for serious injuries before being transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, while the Good Samaritan was taken to Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "An investigation is underway following a single-car collision in Smethwick. We were called to Oldbury Road, this morning (August 4), shortly before 5am to reports that a car had hit a wall. Officers attended alongside other emergency service colleagues and a man in his 20s was taken to hospital with suspected life-changing injuries."
