Grandfather of 20 jailed after Birmingham Airport arrest

Dumitru Marin, a 49-year-old Romanian grandfather of 20, has been sentenced to 16 months in prison after returning to the UK in breach of a deportation order. Marin was arrested at Birmingham Airport on July 18 after arriving on a flight from Belfast, and appeared before Birmingham Crown Court where he admitted the offence.

Arrest and Court Appearance

The court heard that Marin, of Floyer Road, Small Heath, had been deported from the UK on two previous occasions. His criminal record includes 49 offences, and he had previously been granted EU settled status. However, this status was revoked following a conviction for grievous bodily harm in 2021.

Marin was arrested at Birmingham Airport after flying in from Belfast, and the case was heard at Birmingham Crown Court. He pleaded guilty to knowingly entering the UK in breach of a deportation order that had been issued in May 2021.

Defence and Sentencing

In mitigation, defence barrister Ammo Khanna said: "Despite his unattractive history he came back essentially to set up a house for his family, not for any nefarious purpose." Khanna also confirmed that Marin would face deportation once more after serving his sentence, adding: "I couldn't have made it any clearer to him he can't return to this country."

The court imposed a 16-month jail term for the offence. The case highlights the consequences of breaching deportation orders, particularly for individuals with significant criminal histories and prior deportations.

Impact and Next Steps

Following the sentencing, Marin is expected to be deported again once his prison term is complete. The case underscores the UK's enforcement of immigration rules and the seriousness with which courts treat breaches of deportation orders.
