Midland Man Receives 15-Year Sentence for Horrific Partner Assault
A Staffordshire man has been imprisoned for more than fifteen years following a brutal and degrading attack on his partner that left the victim fearing for her life. Liam Dawson, aged thirty-four, carried out a sustained assault that included physical violence and humiliating acts, with the ordeal lasting over an hour.
Details of the Prolonged and Violent Ordeal
Stafford Crown Court heard that Dawson and his partner had been in a relationship for approximately eight months by May of last year. The situation deteriorated when Dawson began drinking heavily. On May 11, the couple had gone to stay at a Holiday Inn hotel in Burton-upon-Trent, with the victim's daughters sleeping in a separate room.
After going out for a meal, they visited a local bar where Dawson consumed excessive alcohol. Upon returning to the hotel, he became aggressive, shouting that they were not staying and demanding to go back to the bar. The victim, feeling scared, complied with his demands.
Escalation of Violence and Terrifying Actions
Dawson drove them erratically, colliding with a cricket club and a metal fence. He then proceeded to assault his partner repeatedly, hitting her head fifteen to twenty times. He took her phone and threw it into a brook, threatening her life and stating, "F*** you, you are getting into the water as well."
He dragged her into the water and forcefully held her head under sewage water, causing her to swallow it and believe she was going to die. Dawson then slammed a car door into her head multiple times and jabbed at her vagina with a car key.
Degrading Acts and Police Intervention
The attack reached a horrifying climax when Dawson defecated on the victim, rubbing his faeces into her cuts and on her face, with some entering her mouth. Fortunately, nearby residents heard her screams and alerted the police. Officers arrived to find the victim in a terrible state, with one stating he struggled to describe the mess she was in, noting her face was almost black with dried blood.
Victim's Emotional Impact and Court Statement
In a powerful statement to the court, the victim, a mother of three, described the assault as humiliating and inhumane. She revealed that the physical injuries were minor compared to the mental health impact, suffering from nightly nightmares and flashbacks. She expressed gratitude to the stranger who heard her screams and saved her life, and directly addressed Dawson, stating, "From today, I give you my pain, my flashbacks and my night terrors."
Sentencing and Defendant's Reaction
Dawson admitted to grievous bodily harm with intent. Despite his defence lawyer stating he now understands the impact of his behaviour, Recorder Michelle Brown noted his previous convictions and violation of a suspended sentence. She sentenced him to fifteen years and three months in prison, with an extended licence period of four years, and issued an indefinite restraining order.
During sentencing, Dawson was observed vaping and laughing from HMP Dovegate. After the sentence was delivered, he exclaimed, "Jah! Rastafari. That is a very nice sentence, your honour," before bursting into hysterical laughter, showing a lack of remorse for his actions.
The case highlights the severe consequences of domestic violence and the importance of community vigilance in reporting such incidents to authorities.
