Violent Attacker Sentenced After Assaulting Girlfriend and Bystander

A man from Suffolk has been imprisoned for a brutal assault that left a Good Samaritan with a broken jaw after she intervened in a violent street argument. Sacha Millar, 34, of Oakes Close in Bury St Edmunds, was sentenced to two years and ten months in prison at Cambridge Crown Court on February 13.

Details of the Disturbing Incident

The attack occurred on Victoria Street in Derby on December 13 last year. Millar was seen arguing with his partner in public before escalating to physical violence, striking her in the face and body, then grabbing and dragging her along the street.

A couple walking past witnessed the altercation, and one of them, a woman, approached to help the victim. In response, Millar turned his aggression toward the intervening bystander, punching her in the face with such force that she lost consciousness and sustained a broken jaw.

Aftermath and Arrest

Following the assault, Millar left the scene and went to a hotel on Full Street where he and his partner were staying. He departed the hotel shortly afterward. Authorities arrested him in his home county of Suffolk four days later, demonstrating a swift police response to the violent crime.

Millar pleaded guilty to assault by beating and causing grievous bodily harm. His sentence also accounts for two additional assaults that occurred in August 2024, highlighting a pattern of violent behavior.

Police Response and Community Message

Detective Sergeant Daniel Goodman of Derbyshire Constabulary condemned Millar's actions, stating: "Millar’s behaviour towards these two women was nothing short of appalling. There is no place for violence against women and girls and we will always work to bring people to justice like in this case."

He emphasized the importance of reporting domestic abuse, encouraging victims to come forward to police who will listen and provide support. For those not ready to contact authorities directly, DS Goodman noted that multiple support organizations are available to assist.

Broader Implications

This case underscores the dangers faced by those who intervene in violent situations, while also highlighting the legal consequences for perpetrators of domestic and public violence. The sentencing serves as a reminder that such crimes are taken seriously by the justice system, with appropriate penalties for those convicted.
