A 60-year-old man from the West Midlands has been handed a suspended prison sentence after being caught in an online sting operation conducted by a vigilante group targeting child predators.
Confrontation and Arrest
Stephen Briscoe, of Adshead Road in Dudley, was confronted at his home in January 2024 by members of the group known as "Broken Dreams." The vigilantes, who pose as children online to identify potential offenders, had been in communication with Briscoe.
The group live-streamed a 50-minute confrontation with Briscoe on Facebook, which continued until officers from West Midlands Police arrived at the scene. Following an investigation, Briscoe was formally charged in March 2024 with attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.
Court Sentencing and Conditions
At court, it was confirmed that Briscoe's communications took place between December 2023 and January 2024 and were for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification.
He was subsequently sentenced to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years. This means he will avoid immediate custody provided he adheres to strict conditions over the next two years.
The court also imposed several other significant requirements:
- Completion of 100 hours of unpaid work.
- Mandatory attendance at rehabilitation activity sessions.
- A 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to restrict his future behaviour and access.
- Registration as a sex offender with the police for 10 years.
Vigilante Action and Legal Process
The case highlights the ongoing activity of so-called paedophile hunter groups like Broken Dreams, who operate outside the police force but whose evidence is increasingly used in prosecutions. Some initial charges against Briscoe were withdrawn at his first court hearing in November.
While the sting led to a conviction, authorities consistently warn that such vigilante actions can complicate official investigations and pose risks. The sentence ultimately handed down by the court focuses on rehabilitation and strict, long-term monitoring of Briscoe's behaviour within the community.
