Police were called after Wimbledon Liberal Democrat MP Paul Kohler claimed men wearing Kingstanding Patriots tops attacked a black man in central London. The alleged assault took place on Concert Hall Approach in Waterloo on Saturday, September 26, at around 4.45pm, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Mr Kohler said he stepped in to stop the incident, which he described in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote: "Just intervened to stop these five nasty thugs wearing Kingstanding Patriots tops beating up a black guy they picked on randomly by the IMAX."
He added: "They’ve now headed toward the South Bank and I’ve called the Met Police who have gone off in search of them." The MP also shared a picture of the group on his social media account.
Police response and victim decision
The Metropolitan Police confirmed to BirminghamLive that officers attended the scene but found both the suspects and victim had already left. A spokesperson said: "At around 4.45pm on Saturday, September 26, police were called to reports of an altercation on Concert Hall Approach, Waterloo."
"Officers attended the scene but upon arrival, both the suspects and victim had left the scene," the spokesperson continued. "After further enquiries, the member of the public who is believed to have been assaulted was later located and spoken to by police."
The alleged victim told police they did not wish to report any offences or support further police action. As a result, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
Ongoing investigation and public appeal
The Metropolitan Police said they would review the case should any further information come to light. The spokesperson added: "No arrests have been made. Should any further information come to light, police will review it."
