Son 'had knife and wouldn't let mum call 999' after teen's tower block fall
Mum's 999 call reveals son's threat after teen's tower block fall

A mother told emergency operators her son had a knife and she feared he might kill her, after his teenage girlfriend fell from a fourth-floor tower block window, a court has heard.

Distressing 999 call played to jury

The jury at Birmingham Crown Court listened to the recorded 999 call made by Kerrie-Anne Grogan in the early hours of November 13, 2022. The call was made over an hour after the incident at her flat in Merton House, Chelmsley Wood, Solihull.

In the call, Miss Grogan is heard saying her son, Jordan Herring, aged 22, had prevented her from calling for help. "He wouldn't let me call. Two hours. He locked us up. He had a knife," she told the handler.

Confusion and fear after the fall

Miss Grogan explained that the 18-year-old victim had been brought back inside the flat after the fall from the fourth floor. She expressed terror, stating, "I'm scared for my life." She also voiced confusion about what had happened, telling the operator: "I don't know if they were arguing or if she did jump. My son said she jumped. She's saying it now."

The call took a more urgent turn when Miss Grogan became highly distressed, repeating 'Jordan's back' and pleading, "Get the police." She whispered to the handler, "I'm scared he's going to get a knife and kill her."

Background of the accused

Earlier in the call, with Herring seemingly present, Miss Grogan had told the operator the teenage girl had jumped and was 'dying'. Jordan Herring from Solihull denies a charge of attempted murder. The court has previously heard that Herring has been found guilty of controlling and coercive behaviour against the same young woman.

The 18-year-old victim suffered serious injuries in the fall and had to be airlifted to hospital for emergency treatment. The trial at Birmingham Crown Court continues.
