A 43-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a robbery at a Nationwide bank in Wellington, where around £2,000 in cash was taken after a suspect claimed to have a firearm. West Mercia Police confirmed that no one was injured during the incident, which took place on Monday, August 24.
Officers were called to the Nationwide branch on New Street at approximately 11.39am following reports that a man had entered the premises and stated he had a gun. The suspect left the scene before police arrived, according to a spokesperson for the force.
Arrest made in Wolverhampton
Two days later, on Wednesday, August 26, officers arrested a 43-year-old man on suspicion of robbery in Wolverhampton. He remains in police custody as enquiries continue.
The same man was also arrested on suspicion of robbery in connection with an incident at a Co-op store in Albrighton on Friday, August 21, and on suspicion of burglary relating to a break-in at a café in Wellington on Friday, July 3.
Police reassure community
Detective Sergeant Craig Ryder said: "We understand incidents of this nature can be concerning for local communities; however, I would like to reassure residents that a swift investigation has led to the arrest of a man in connection with Monday’s robbery."
"Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident. Our enquiries remain ongoing while the suspect remains in custody, and I would like to thank the public for their support and patience while officers continue their work," he added.
Ongoing investigation
A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "A man has been arrested in connection with a robbery at a bank in Wellington on Monday (24 August). At around 11.39am officers were called to reports that a man entered Nationwide on New Street saying he had a firearm before taking around £2,000 in cash."
The spokesperson continued: "No one was injured during the incident and the man left the scene before officers arrived. Yesterday (Wednesday 26 August) officers arrested a 43-year-old man on suspicion of robbery in Wolverhampton. He remains in police custody as enquiries continue."
