New Police Vehicle Aims to Reduce Uninsured Driving in the Midlands

Staffordshire Police has introduced a new Toyota Corolla specifically designed to target motorists driving without insurance, a crime that statistics show affects approximately one in every 140 drivers on average in the region. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance road safety and enforce traffic laws more effectively.

Funding and Purpose of the Special Police Car

The vehicle has been fully funded by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB), an organization dedicated to combating uninsured driving throughout the United Kingdom. According to MIB data, there are an average of 300,000 uninsured vehicles on UK roads each day. This figure represents a significant portion of the estimated 42 million vehicles that travel daily, as reported by the RAC Foundation.

The new police car was officially added to Staffordshire Police's fleet on Monday, March 16, and immediately proved its effectiveness by assisting in the seizure of six cars for lack of insurance on its very first day of operation. This rapid impact underscores the critical need for such targeted enforcement measures.

Rising Trends in Uninsured Driving

Recent years have seen a troubling increase in uninsured driving incidents. In 2024, Staffordshire Police seized 2,564 uninsured vehicles, followed by 2,875 in 2025, marking a 12% rise. This upward trend highlights the growing challenge that law enforcement faces in maintaining road safety and compliance with insurance regulations.

Official Statements on the Initiative

Chief Inspector Scott McGrath emphasized the importance of this new tool, stating, "Reducing harm on our roads remains a top priority, and removing uninsured drivers from them helps to do just that. I am delighted to see this partnership with MIB. The new vehicle will go a long way to helping our dedicated road crime and road harm prevention teams tackle the blight of uninsured driving."

He further added, "This initiative is not just about enforcing the law but about protecting our communities. I look forward to seeing the impact this vehicle has on our mission to go after and take action against individuals who use the road network for criminality and to keep people safe."

Hayley Sutcliffe, law enforcement liaison officer at MIB, also commented, "We’re really proud to support Staffordshire’s Special Constables with this dedicated ANPR-equipped vehicle. These volunteers give up their own time to help make the roads safer for everyone, and having reliable access to the right equipment will make a meaningful difference to their ability to identify and remove uninsured vehicles."

Broader Implications and Community Impact

Sutcliffe noted that the visibility of the new police car is expected to serve as a deterrent, encouraging drivers to verify that their insurance is both valid and appropriate for their needs. "We hope the visibility of this new car encourages drivers to double-check that their insurance is valid and suitable for their needs. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this vehicle has and to continuing our strong working relationship with Staffordshire Police," she said.

This deployment represents a strategic move by Staffordshire Police to leverage advanced technology and partnerships in addressing a persistent issue that poses risks to all road users. By focusing on uninsured driving, the force aims to not only reduce accidents and injuries but also to foster a safer driving environment across the Midlands.
