UK Dog Owners Under Spotlight as New Framework Aims to Curb Irresponsible Behaviour
With millions of dogs residing across the United Kingdom, these beloved four-legged companions are a common sight in local parks and on neighbourhood streets. However, a recent YouGov survey commissioned by Dogs Trust and the RSPCA has uncovered a significant gap between perception and reality among dog owners and the general public.
Survey Highlights Widespread Concerns Over Dog Ownership
The survey found that while an overwhelming 96% of dog owners believe they are responsible, a striking 86% of the public report experiencing issues linked to irresponsible ownership. Key problems identified include dog waste not being picked up, inadequate training, and pets being allowed off-lead in restricted areas.
Specifically, 72% of individuals who witnessed bad behaviour noted seeing dog mess left on the ground, highlighting a persistent environmental and health hazard. Additional concerns raised in the study involve dogs jumping on people and aggressive behaviour being ignored by owners.
National Data Reveals Owner Anxieties
Supporting these findings, National Dog Survey data indicates that 40% of dog owners worry about the behaviour of other people's dogs when attempting to keep their own pets safe. This statistic underscores the broader community impact of irresponsible practices and the need for clearer guidelines.
New Framework and Public Consultation Launched
In response to these challenges, Dogs Trust and the RSPCA have developed a new 'Responsible Dog Ownership' framework. This initiative aims to provide a consistent guide for all stakeholders, covering various aspects of dog care, such as how dogs and people can better share public spaces and how owners can ensure their pets lead happy, healthy lives.
The charities have launched a national consultation to gather public views on this framework. It is hoped that local governments, police forces, animal welfare organisations, and other groups across the country will adopt this blueprint, ensuring all dog owners have a clear understanding of responsible practices.
Expert Insights on the Initiative
Owen Sharp, chief executive of Dogs Trust, emphasised the broader benefits, stating: "Responsible dog ownership benefits everyone, not just those with dogs, because safer, well-cared-for dogs help create safer communities." He added: "We're asking the public to help shape the future of responsible dog ownership in the UK, so whether you're a dog owner or not, we want to hear what responsible dog ownership means to you."
Dr Samantha Gaines, RSPCA dog welfare expert, highlighted the importance of shared understanding, noting: "Understanding what responsible dog ownership is and what that looks like is integral to keeping dogs and communities safe and happy." She explained: "This consultation will be invaluable in building a shared understanding of what responsible ownership looks like — from devoted dog owners to those who regularly interact with dogs, and everyone in between."
