Police Officer Injured in Oakham Hit-and-Run as Honda Driver Rams Officer
A police officer was injured in a shocking hit-and-run incident in Oakham, Leicestershire, after the driver of a grey Honda CRV reportedly rammed the officer and fled the scene. The incident occurred on Monday, January 26, just after 3.10pm on High Street, leaving the officer with minor cuts and grazes.
Officer Mounts Bonnet During Confrontation
According to Leicestershire Police, two officers were attending the scene when they spotted the Honda illegally parked. The male driver allegedly refused to engage with the officers and then drove towards one of them. The car struck the officer, causing him to mount the bonnet before landing on the pavement. The driver then collided with two stationary vehicles before making off from the area.
Extensive Search Launched for Suspect
In a bid to track down the suspect, Leicestershire Police deployed multiple resources, including a police dog, a drone, and assistance from the National Police Air Service. The car was found abandoned a few hours later in Harrington Way. Detective Inspector Jim Willoughby of Leicestershire Police stated that the force is urgently trying to find the man responsible, emphasising that while the officer was not seriously injured, the incident involved being deliberately driven at and hit by a car to evade police.
Investigation Ongoing with Public Appeal
The investigation continues, with police having already recovered CCTV from the area and carried out house-to-house enquiries. Detective Inspector Willoughby appealed to the public for information, asking if anyone was in the High Street area around the time of the incident or in Harrington Way and saw the driver running from the car. He noted that any details could help in finding the person responsible, and information can be passed online or by calling 101, quoting crime reference 26*50240. The officer has since been checked by a medical professional as a precaution.
