Over-60s Face £70 Fines in Blue Badge Crackdown

Motorists over the age of 60 are being warned they could face fines of up to £70 for incorrectly displaying their Blue Badge photocard, even if the oversight is accidental. The warning comes as part of a broader crackdown on misuse of disabled parking spaces across England.

How the Fines Work

Drivers who fail to display their Blue Badge photocard properly may receive a penalty charge notice of around £70. More serious violations, such as deliberately using someone else's badge or abusing the scheme, can result in confiscation of the badge and fines as high as £1,000.

Blue Badge Rules

A Blue Badge allows the holder to use accessible parking options, including designated disabled bays. The badge is personal and non-transferable. While someone picking up or dropping off the badge holder can use it, the holder cannot lend it to others for errands or shopping. If the badge is no longer needed, it must be returned to the local council.

Statistics and Expert Warning

As of March 2026, 10.3% of motorists over 60 in England hold a Blue Badge — a rate three times higher than those aged 50 to 59. Lee Cartwright, owner of Mobility Solutions Direct, emphasized the impact of misuse: “People often assume it’s fine if they’re only stopping for a few minutes, especially when the car park is full. But for someone dealing with chronic pain, breathing difficulties or limited mobility, that one space can make all the difference. Without it, the walk from a standard bay can be too much to handle.”

He added: “When the weather improves and places get busier, finding accessible parking becomes even more difficult. If disabled bays are already occupied by drivers who shouldn’t be using them, it can mean people are forced to turn around and go home. It might mean someone having to abandon their plans entirely. A trip to pick up essentials, meet a friend or even just get out of the house becomes a lot harder if the space designed to make that possible has already been taken.”
